North Segment
Highland Avenue to Odem Medo Road
The stretch of highway between Highland Avenue and Odem Medo Road hosts several restaurants, retailers, a movie theater and more, running directly next to the canal on the south end. Participants in prior discussions about this area indicated that this business area could be enhanced with a uniform, continuous landscape throughout, creating a more pedestrian-friendly environment. Street trees and wider sidewalks might welcome more pedestrians and businesses to the area.
To increase safety while turning in and out of businesses along this section, one idea is to develop a one- or two-way frontage road (also called a multi-way boulevard)—a parallel road running between Highway 97 and adjacent businesses, which connects several properties in the segment and could be lined with angled or parallel parking.
By consolidating access points to properties along the highway, vehicles can turn into and out of businesses in a safer manner. Additionally, it could free space for landscaping and sidewalks, where appropriate, alongside businesses.
To improve the ability to get from the west side to the east side of 97 and vice versa, streets with signalized intersections could be constructed that would extend over the canal and across the highway. This would help bridge the divide between corridor businesses and neighborhoods to the west.
